According to the Merriam-Webster (2019) dictionary, a femme is, “a lesbian who is notably or stereotypically feminine in appearance and manner”.
While femme is typically placed into a female role… it’s 2019, let’s be real. Femme can be anyone that enjoys embracing their feminine side.
For example, I have guy friends that are femmes, I have trans friends that are femmes, I know bisexuals that are femmes, and you get the point. ANYONE CAN BE A FEMME! It is not limited to just lesbians.
Recently on a trip to New York, I was talking to a friend and they were like yeah you’re a “high femme”… I was like what is a “high femme”, I legit had never heard that term before. Owning a femme lgbtq+ clothing line… it made me feel like a bad femme I cannot even lie.
That is why The Meredith is one of my fav shirts to wear out. It starts a conversation with other femmes or helps bring awareness. Check Out The Meredith
So apparently there are levels to this $h*t.
High Femme/ Lipstick Lesbian: A femme who gets their nails done, wears makeup, dresses excessively girly
Stem: A mix of a stud and a femme. A femme who wears light makeup, has girly tendencies, but still is more of a tomboy.
Tomboy Femme: A femme that does not like to wear makeup, wears gender-fluid clothing most of the time but does not mind wearing dresses and skirts on occasion.
At the end of the day, a label does not even matter. I think it is fun to find out what other people classify us as. I find comfort in my label and love being a high femme lesbian. If you are not one of those people that finds comfort in labels, that is 100% fine too. Never let anyone make you feel like you have to wear one!
